Jousting Equipment for Second Life Avatar

Equipment

RL v.s. SL JOUSTING

Courtesy of the Double Dragon Academy

In RL (Real Life)  Medieval armor design varied as to purpose.  For jousting, specialized armor was created  to reduce injury, like that worn at left by John of Saxony (1468-1532).

1 It had a 'Frog mouth helm' or Stechhelm to deflect lance or splinters away from the eye slit.

2  Small circular Besagew were used to cover gaps in armor such as exposed armpits.

3 Vamplates on the  lance protected hands.

4 Guantlets were mit like, not glove like to avoid broken fingers.

5 Tassets were flexible to conform and protect bended legs on horses.

Larger pieces of heavier armor were worn to protect the left side against lance impact, eventually giving way to

6 Targes (small wood shields) covered in leather,  bone, or brightly painted with COA.  They were strapped

over armor and covered

the shoulder

to take the hit

of the lance.

7 Brayette

(codpiece)

LANCES

HORSES

The Horse armor above is from Medieval Designs,

the first in SL to offer a jousting lance, armor and helms.

The Aavatar armor is from Sillouette Warfare and highly detailed mesh.  The Lance is not scripted.  More can be found by touching the documents on the right.

In SL (Second Life)

Horses are worn

like a shirt, complete

with animations such

as moving legs,

and follow the avatar.

Amor may look good

but offers little protection

and can add to script

counts, leading to lag (drag).

Lances shoot rapid fire

bullets (fade quickly)

at the avies collision plane,

to score a hit.  All of these items

are 'phantom' to allow movement through physical properties.

Outfitting your SL avatar for Medieval jousting comes

down to three key elements: Lance, Horse and Armor (or clothing).

Many choices are available.  Provided are lists of lances and horses, but they are often free at training sites like the Double Dragon Academy. Armor and clothing choices are too numerous to cite so a link to the SL Marketplace is provided.
